Compared to the sale of electric vehicles whose sales grow by 10%, the best-selling vehicle profile in the first part of 2022 is a 10-year-old diesel car. In fact, 60% of second-hand operations respond to this profile.

With the focus on the Iberian Peninsula, new passenger car registrations in Spain fell by 12.1% year-on-year, to 69,111 units, according to the Spanish Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers (Anfac) included in the monthly report on the automotive sector. the automotive sector of May 2022. And in the first four months there is already a decrease of 11.8% with 233,509 units.

This situation is due to economic uncertainty and the supply crisis that condition the activity of the sector. A sector that only by the end of 2022 forecasts sales of some 800,000 units.

In the rental channel there is a strong setback with a 40% drop in the 12,058 units that marks the April result. While second-hand car sales fell in April, for the third consecutive month, to 134,005 units. This data represents a decrease of 17.3%.

Production

As for the production of automobiles in Spain, from January to April, it fell by 11.4% in the first four months of 2022, according to ANFAC data and has a volume of 584,619 units.

While the automobile production data for last April show a more contained year-on-year drop to 4.1% with 141,495 units produced. Regarding the production of pure electric vehicles in Spain, this was 4.3% in the first quarter, 6.1% in the month of April, with 8.2% occupied by the plug-in hybrid.

In reference to automobile production in Spain, ANFAC does not contemplate the full recovery of the automobile industry until the beginning of 2023. In addition, with the provisional data collected during the month of May, IHS Markit estimates a growth of 12.36% for Spain compared to 2021. This data is still far from the 23.46% that was expected in the month of February but it is higher than the European data that is estimated at 4.51%.
